The Constraints of the Command
God tells us plainly: "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children..." (Deut. 6:6-7). This is a directive from God and must be taken seriously. The materials we use are optional, but memorizing Scripture is imperative. God requires parents to be faithful in doing it themselves, and diligent in requiring their children to follow their example. God commands it; we need it, our children must have it.
The Proficiency of the Plan
The plan of Scripture Memory has been developed over the years with great care and study. The Scriptures to be memorized are carefully selected, organized under vital topics and printed in handy, attractive Memory Books which you can take with you. You do not memorize scattered verses. Each Memory Book is a storehouse of Bible truth that feeds the soul, and is treasured from generation to generation. We encourage you to "make them your own" by underlining, or jotting down your own thoughts with the individual verses.
The Results of the Requirements
Accountability is at the heart of this system. Memorizing Scripture is a serious matter; it involves discipline and the devil always resists. We help you to develop a recitation schedule with built-in requirements to follow. Once we receive a copy of your schedule, we place it in the hands of a Scripture Memory "Family" member who will follow your progress with prayer. We cannot overestimate the power of prayer. It is our hope that your effort will not be just a one-time thrust, but one which will continue year after year.
The Rationale of Rewards
Yes indeed, it is proper and wise to give rewards for memorizing Scripture, though people should do it without them. Spurgeon's own grandmother paid him a farthing for each verse memorized. SMF offers three rewards, largely in the form of good Christian books. Rewards supply inspiration to persevere and provide quality reading material. There is also an Achievement Folder and a special week of camp.
